Social media connects us with more people than anyone could have imagined before the birth of computers. People used to write letters. People used to only know those they encountered in their small spheres of life. Today, sites like Facebook connect us with others hundreds or thousands of miles away.
And everyone uses it.
Facebook has more users than there are people in any country in the world apart from China and India. Put another way, if Facebook was a country, it would be the third largest country in the world. There are over 400,000,000 (that’s 400 million) Facebook users. The population of all of South America is only 382 million. There are over 100 million Facebook users in the US alone – over a third of the US’s current population.
Facebook gets more weekly traffic than Google.
Twitter is another interesting phenomenon.
Ashton Kutcher and Britney Spears together have more followers on Twitter than the populations of Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Israel, Libya, Norway, Panama, Scotland, Sweden, and Switzerland.
It takes four minutes to watch an average Youtube video…and during that time over 100 hours worth of video are uploaded.
More than half of the world’s population is under the age of 30.
If social media continues the same growth it has seen in the last five years, more than 1 billion people will be on Facebook and Twitter in less than two years.
Do you still use the yellow pages? Neither do your customers.
Do you want to reach out to them where they already are, online?
